Overview
Gosaikunda is a cluster of sacred alpine lakes at 4,380 meters, set among barren rocky peaks in the Langtang National Park. Hindu mythology holds that Lord Shiva created the lake by striking the mountain with his trident to get water after swallowing poison during the churning of the ocean. During the Janai Purnima festival, thousands of pilgrims make the steep climb to bathe in the icy waters, and the lake holds deep religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists.
The trek to Gosaikunda from Dhunche takes you through dense rhododendron and oak forests that give way to alpine scrub and bare rock as you climb. The views from the Laurebina Pass and the lakeside are stunning, with the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal, and even the Annapurnas visible on clear days. This moderate trek is manageable for most fit walkers and offers a powerful mix of natural beauty and spiritual atmosphere that few treks in Nepal can match.
